Your Sleep Answer Questions Answered

1. Why did Dr. Wurtman create this product?

One of the top complaints of adults age 40 and older is difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep the whole night. Many have tried melatonin supplements to help them sleep but have been dissatisfied with the results.

Dr. Richard Wurtman discovered through his own research that as we age, our brain produces less melatonin, the hormone that regulates the sleep cycle. He found that supplemental melatonin helped restore nighttime melatonin levels, and that the optimal and most efficacious dose for adults 40+ was only 0.3 mg.

Healthy Directions has partnered with Dr. Richard Wurtman to develop Sleep Answer, the only sleep aid that combines low dose melatonin in a patented dual-release capsule to help adults 40+ fall asleep and stay asleep each night.

Using the patented Licaps® cap-in-cap technology, this product delivers two doses of melatonin—one 0.3 mg in a fast-acting liquid in the outer capsule to help you fall asleep, and a second 0.6 mg dose 3 to 4 hours later from the controlled-release melatonin microbeads contained in the inner capsule to ensure melatonin levels stay elevated through the night, so customers can stay asleep the whole night through.

With daily use, now adults 40+ can experience safe, natural sleep like they had when they were younger and get back to the life they deserve.

2. Why is the dosage of melatonin so low? Most products contain 1, 3, or 5 mg of melatonin.

Melatonin is a hormone that the body produces in very small amounts to regulate the sleep cycle. As we age, the body produces less such that by the age of 70, it is producing only about ¼ of the amount of young adults. Dr. Wurtman’s research found that only small amounts of melatonin (0.3 mg) are needed to correct these deficiencies to help people fall asleep faster and sleep more throughout the night. He also found that giving higher doses (1 mg or more) of melatonin can desensitize the melatonin receptors, and leave some people feeling groggy the next day.

However, other doctors believe higher doses of melatonin are not only safe, but preferred due to their personal experience and research. Higher doses of melatonin may also be necessary for younger people to achieve better sleep.

3. What is Dr. Wurtman’s experience with low dose melatonin and Sleep Answer?

Through his research, Dr. Wurtman discovered that low dose melatonin (0.3 mg) was most efficacious in improving sleep in older adults. In his own experience, Dr. Wurtman was taking low dose (0.3 mg) melatonin for many years with great success. However, as he got older, he noticed that he still woke up in the middle of the night and had difficulty falling back asleep. So he began taking a second dose of melatonin when he woke up in the middle of the night, which he found quickly helped him fall back asleep until the morning. But Sleep Answer eliminates even that need, by automatically giving you a second low dosage right around the time the first would be wearing off.

4. I’ve been taking higher doses of melatonin; will this product be effective for me?

If you have been taking high doses of melatonin (1-10 mg) for a long period of time, it can overwhelm and desensitize the melatonin receptors. You should discontinue melatonin supplements for 3 days to allow the melatonin receptors to reset themselves before trying Sleep Answer.

5. I tried Sleep Answer and it didn’t work for me—should I take more?

Sleep Answer and its specific dose of melatonin is formulated for the 40+ adult. If you have been taking higher doses of melatonin (1-10 mg), you should discontinue melatonin supplements for 3 days before trying Sleep Answer.

Sleep Answer should be taken for at least 1 week since completely resetting your body clock can take longer in some people. We do not recommend taking more than 1 dual-release capsule each night.

6. Will Sleep Answer work for me if I am in my 30s?

Sleep Answer and its specific dose of melatonin is formulated for the 40+ adult; younger adults may find that while it may help them sleep better, it may not be as efficacious as in older adults.

7. What is the dual-release technology? Why is there a capsule inside the liquid? What are the blue beadlets?

Sleep Answer utilizes the patented Licaps® liquid filled capsule technology with its unique capsule-in-capsule delivery system. The outer capsule contains a liquid (glycerin) containing 0.3 mg of solubilized (fully dissolved) melatonin. The inner capsule (floating in the liquid) contains blue, time-released microbeads delivering 0.6 mg melatonin, for a total of 0.9 mg of melatonin nightly—the same dosage used personally by Dr. Wurtman.

8. Why is there a bubble inside the liquid? How is the capsule sealed to prevent leaks?

Sleep Answer is made with Licaps® liquid capsules which include a freshness bubble to maintain stability and potency of the contents. It is normal and does not indicate that the capsules are not fully filled. The capsules are sealed by patented process to prevent leaking of the liquid contents.

9. Can I take this product every night? Will I become dependent on it? Are there any side effects, such as vivid dreams or morning grogginess?

Melatonin is a hormone found naturally in the body. Taking low doses of melatonin to help correct the natural decline of melatonin levels associated with age is safe to do every night and without negative side effects. Unlike high dose melatonin, which may cause vivid dreams, or next day grogginess, Sleep Answer (and its low dose of melatonin) is not associated with these side effects, and is safe and non-habit-forming.

10. Who should take this product?

This product is for adults 40+ years of age who experience sleep troubles, including difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early.

11. Who should not take this product?

The dosage of melatonin in this product is shown to be most efficacious in adults 40+ and therefore may not show the same results in younger adults. However it is safe and non-habit-forming.

Also, pregnant or lactating women, or those who are trying to become pregnant should avoid melatonin.

This product is not intended for children under the age of 12.

13. What are the ingredients (with daily dose) and what are they good for?

Melatonin (0.9 mg total daily dose) — the liquid provides 0.3 mg and the blue microbeads in the inner capsule provide 0.6 mg.

  • Melatonin is the hormone produced naturally in the body that helps regulate the sleep cycle. Melatonin works by telling your brain that it is time to sleep.
  • Due to natural aging of the pineal (pie-nee-al) gland, melatonin levels decrease with age.
  • Dr. Wurtman discovered in his research that for adults 50 years and older, low dose melatonin (0.3 mg) was effective in raising nighttime melatonin levels and helped subjects fall asleep faster while improving sleep efficiency (how well you sleep at night in bed).

20. Should I take this product every night, or only when I have trouble sleeping?

If you have trouble sleeping, and are 40+ years of age, the natural decline in melatonin levels is not correctable aside from taking melatonin supplements. To help restore melatonin levels to those found in young adults, and promote a full night’s sleep, low dose melatonin supplements should be taken every night.

While some people will experience better sleep the first night they take low dose melatonin, some may need to take melatonin every night for 1 week to fully reset their sleep clock. Therefore taking melatonin only on occasion may not be effective. It should be taken nightly to help restore melatonin levels to those which are found in young adults.

21. How many capsules are in the box?

28 Dual-Release capsules (a 4-week supply)
